Meeting Minutes of the Martin Drive Neighborhood Association

WASHINGTON PARK SENIOR CENTER - 4420 W Vliet Street

The mission of the Martin Drive Neighborhood Association, through its programs and projects, is to embrace and foster a sense of belonging and common purpose, in order to create a neighborhood that is beautiful, diverse, secure, and fun for everyone!

Mary started the meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Mary acknowledge the death of Daniel Gardner in Washington Park

Mary talked about the make up of the MDNA gave the examples of each committee. More information can be found at www.martin-drive.orgunder the Association link.

Alderman Murphy talked about the positive effect of neighbors on Martin Drive and Washington Park. The Urban Ecology Center was recently visited by Washington Heights Residents and a presenter talked about the hundreds of kids that use the Center.

Alderman Murphy talked about the Milwaukee Police Department Neighborhood Bike Patrol. He wants neighbors to understand that one tragic incident is not a symbol of the neighborhood.

Murphy said that property values have bottomed out. Thirty percent of property is tax exempt. New legislation will exempt billboards from money made on sales and will only tax property structure.

Alderman Murphy talked about residency. The Milwaukee Police Union and Milwaukee Fire Department failed to get residency in their bargaining. The budget in Madison will take the requirement away. In other cities when the residency requirement was lifted, ten years later, fifty percent of employees left the city they worked in. There is value in having those people in our neighborhoods. Having the legislature "bargain" with Fire and Police unions isn't fair.

Alderman Murphy did not support the street car for financial reasons. He said that this is another example of interference in the public good of Milwaukee. He said let local officials make decisions. If you do not like local officials, you can vote them out of office. Madison is interfering in the process.

Steve talked about the community garden and future projects.

Sharon talked about the neighborhood-wide rummage sale. She said that this is a great event for neighbors to meet and sell their stuff.

Mary talked about the sign up list.

The first planning meeting is June 1 for the summer picnic. If you would like to volunteer to help plan this year’s wonderful tradition contact Shirley Drake at 414-313-9476 or annesdrake@gmail.com

The summer reading program starts today. You get a super reader folder and can use it to keep track of how many minutes a child reads. Those minutes adds up to discounts for food and tickets to local attractions. You can also sign up at mpl.org

Martin Drive will be a super reader neighborhood. We will encourage children to participate in the program.

Mary highlighted good neighbor deeds from the past year.

Pat Mueller said the Bloom and Groom Event is this Saturday. There have been 47 orders so far.

Raymond said neighbors can keep up to date by liking the Martin Drive Neighborhood Facebook Page. You can read posts directly from the neighborhood website without being a member of Facebook. Go towww.martin-drive.org and scroll down.

Raymond explained the idea about being a non-profit and explained how the idea developed from our discussions about a neighbor improvement district, NID (see attached). He said tonight's decision is around should we look into being a non-profit. A neighbor asked if we need a board of directors to be a non-profit. It was answered that we need to have a voting process to spend funds and it could be a board. After the presentation, it was decided by a hand vote that we should look into being a non-profit.

Sharon talked about the white sheet to indicate if you would like some neighborhood meetings to remain on a Monday night at 6 or 6:30 p.m. or a Saturday morning/afternoon.

County Supervisor Stamper, II, talked about the e-newsletter, a June 20 town forum at the Washington Park Senior Center. He talked about putting barriers to protect kids from high speed traffic on Lisbon. He is looking into cameras and signage to encourage only kids under 17 to use the playground equipment and encourage adult supervision. Four County Sheriffs will be dedicated to the park.

The meeting ended at 8 p.m.
